Four Must Know Techniques For Painting Beginners

We want all our customers to thoroughly enjoy themselves, whether they are taking one of our very unique art classes or are attending private parties where we are there helping them create their own masterpieces while having the time of their lives. Because we know that our current and potential customers cannot always be with us having fun painting their pieces of artwork, we thought we would share a few “must know” techniques for painting beginners.

Once you have gathered a few basic painting supplies like your favorite colors of acrylic paints, brushes, and your canvas or paper, it is time to begin your journey into the magical and fun world of painting!

The Basics Of Applying Paint

There are a variety of techniques used when applying paint to a canvas or paper, including:

  1. Dry Brushing – The first technique we will cover is the ‘dry brush’ technique. This involves applying paint to your surface using a dry paintbrush and paint that has not been diluted with water. This will create a strong current of color on the surface with uneven lines while adding texture and movement to the lines.
  2. Washing – Another common paint application technique is ‘washing’. This involves using watered down paint to apply translucent washes to the surface. Mixing washing with the dry brushing method can create a variety of textures to your piece.
  3. Stippling – The ‘stippling’ method of paint application involves creating numerous tiny dots on the surface to create imagery. You can use this method to show texture, create an image or to create a stunning scene with slight color variations.
  4. Dabbing – The ‘dabbing’ technique is just as it sounds: you dab paint onto the surface using the corner of a sponge or a piece of paper towel. Dabbing adds texture and movement to a piece. For instance, you can use the dabbing technique to create treetops that appear as though they are swaying in the breeze.
